True Finn's Party

Vice Chair Raimo Vistbacka

1.6%
of the 2003 parliamentary election votes

The True Finns Party (Perussuomalaiset) was established in 1995 as an offshoot from the Rural Party (Suomen Maaseudun Puolue, SMP). It campaigns against immigration, asylum and development aid, using populist rhetoric. The party has campaigned against joining the planned common EU asylum system.

The True Finns Party currently has three seats in the 200-seat national parliament, after it increased its share of the vote in the 2003 election. Prior to that, it had had one seat since 1995. In the last municipal elections, in 2000, it got 0.7% of the vote but a much larger share is expected in the forthcoming elections in October 2004.

Tony Halme, the Party's Helsinki MP, has used his seat in parliament to blame foreigners, particularly from the Baltic states, for crime. 'The increase of criminality,' he has said, 'is in direct relation to the increase of foreigners in our country.' He has also said, 'those people who have foreigners as their neighbours either sleep very badly or not al all.'
