An open letter from desperate Roma

By Liz Fekete

1 April 1995

Roma from the Plovdiv district have written an open letter detailing human rights abuses in Rakitova. They have written anonymously, because 'they are not sure what awaits us tomorrow'.

On 31 January 1995, residents of Rakitova and policemen from the Povdov district attacked Roma, including women, children and elderly people, on the streets. After complaining to the mayor, the Roma found themselves victimised again. Policemen came to the quarters, fired gunshots into the air, attacked the Romany and broke into their homes. Four people were badly wounded from gunfire, including one man shot in the waist. Over fifteen people suffered severe injuries after being beaten by the police. Several Romany were arrested and taken by force into the woods where the police had a mobile caravan.

'We are treated inferior to dogs, deprived of human rights' conclude the Roma.
