Kazanlak region: Roma killed in man-trap

By Liz Fekete

1 November 2002

On 7 October 2002 Boyan Mihailov, a 24-year-old Romani man, apparently trespassing in a Bulgarian vineyard in the Kazanlak region, was shot and killed by a home-made firearm trap.

Following the incident, police removed six such traps (all filled with gunpowder and pellets) from the vineyard. The owner faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm, which carries a possible five-year sentence. He is also under investigation for causing serious injury to another Romani man in the same way.
