Skinhead attacks increase in Helsinki

By Liz Fekete

1 June 1995

Police in Helsinki say they are concerned about the rise in the number of skinhead attacks against immigrants as Helsinki becomes a base for skinheads from across the country.

Thirty violent assaults were recorded by the police in 1994. In some instances large gangs of 40-50 skinheads have carried out attacks on individual immigrants. And skinheads are recording their attacks on film, as the police found when they confiscated a video showing skinheads brutally attacking an immigrant who they kicked unconscious.
