Support group formed at Hungary's largest refugee camp

By Liz Fekete

1 March 1997

A support group has been set up to help refugees at the Nagyatad refugee camp.

Some 2000 refugees from the former-Yugoslavia are housed at the camp, the largest of its kind in Hungary, and a transit station for thousands. The majority of the camp population are Bosnian Muslims, but there are also ethnic Albanians, ethnic Hungarians, Serbs and Croats.

According to the support group, the stress experienced by the refugees held at the camp is 'exacerbated by the monotony and inactivity of camp life'. They work directly with the refugees to provide creative outlets for their energies and anxieties.
