Romany representative councils established

By Liz Fekete

1 March 1995

A bill passed by the Hungarian parliament in September means that Romany representative councils with consultative status will be established in each of Hungary's 519 municipal and district communities.

The councils will comprise between 3 and 5 elected members (depending on the size of the community) and will consult local authorities on general issues, having the right to veto measures of specific concern to the Romany.

Elections for the representative councils took place on 11 December.
