Tension mounts in Sicily

By Liz Fekete

1 March 1997

Immigrants in Gela, Sicily, are said to be in a state of panic after a series of racist incidents.

A racist attack by five youths on two North African beach sellers, during which the North Africans were beaten with sticks and told to 'go home to Africa', was believed to be in reprisal for an incident the night before when one of the immigrants, who practised karate, defended himself from racial harassment.
