Northern League introduces amendment to legalise torture

By Liz Fekete

23 April 2004

The Northern League has been criticised by Amnesty International after League member Carolina Lussana drafted an amendment to legislation suggesting torture would only be illegal if it was a repeated act.

During a debate in the Chamber of Deputies, the League, which said it was influenced by police violence at the G8 summit in Genoa three years ago, said that violence and threats only became torture if they were used repeatedly. AI pointed out that the proposed amendment violated the UN Convention on Torture, which Italy had signed.
