Racist attacks
By Liz Fekete
1 April 1995
Rome
An anti-racist, anti-fascist coordinating group in south Rome says that not a day goes by without a serious gang-attack or knifing of an immigrant. They place the blame on MSI die-hards, Buontempo, Gramazio and Allemanno who are all deputies in Rome.
Cases reported in il manifesto include:
- A black French soldier and a Spanish sailor attacked in Tor San Lorenzon by a bunch of thugs who tried to run them over before beating them up;
- Deisiris Laksiri Mahatelge, a 19-year-old Sinhalese petrol-pump attendent, attacked by a gang who hurled racial insults at him before beating him with chains.
Sardinia
Ndiaye Daouda, a 24-year-old Senegalese farm worker, was beaten up in Sestu, Sardinia, for refusing to drink water from a tub normally reserved for dogs. Daouda's attackers were his employer and his friends, all very drunk at the time. The following day, the Senegalese man went to his employer, asking to be paid the 750 thousand lire owed to him for his previous month's work. Daouda managed to escape the wrath of his employer, went to hospital for treatment and reported the assault to the police.
Pisa
A 5-year-old child, Matteo Salkanovic, probably from the former-Yugoslavia, lost a finger when a sophisticated letter-bomb, containing a children's book of fables, exploded at a 'nomad's' encampment in Cascina, Pisa. A group of motorcyclists who regularly turn up at the camp and threaten residents are suspected.
