Police round up Romany in 'Camp Liquidation'

By Liz Fekete

1 October 1996

A police operation against Warsaw's Roma, codenamed 'Camp Liquidation', has spread panic, forcing Roma into hiding in manholes, cellars, under the canals and inside the air-vent systems of railway stations.

Anything to avoid deportation.

The police round-up started with the arrest of 113 Roma camping under a bridge who were subsequently sent to the Ukraine and from there to Romania. According to Michal Mazurowski, mayor of Bielan, more round-ups would follow and property left behind by the Roma would be burnt.
