In 1995, after 10 cases involving the use of aircraft to smuggle immigrants in, special groups of police and army were formed and the Border Guard issued with radar and helicopters. As the latest smuggling method is via TIR trucks, border guards have now been issued with carbon dioxide sensors. 'There will be no need to open any containers - detectors will tell us if the load contains refugees or not.'
