Investigation after police chief kills Roma

By Liz Fekete

1 March 1997

On 9 May, the chief of police in Valcele, Olt County, shot and killed Mircea-Muresul Mosor, a 26-year-old Roma.

According to the police, the shooting was an act of self-defence after Mosor raised a stick against the officer. But the EERC has found evidence which contradicts the police statements, including hospital records which show that the Roma was shot from behind. The Military Prosecutor's office is presently investigating.
