Deadly Voyage

By Liz Fekete

1 December 1996

A film, Deadly Voyage, has been made about the murder of eight African stowaways, killed by the Ukrainian crew of MC Ruby in 1993.

One Ghanaian stowaway, Kingsley Ofusu, escaped and lived to tell the tale.

The stowaways were from Takoradi, a crumbling port town four hours from Accra. On 23 October 1992, they stowed away on MC Ruby, a cargo ship bound for Le Havre. But when the Ukrainian crew found the Africans, they systematically slaughtered them, two at a time. Kingsley Ofusu witnessed his brother, Albert, being beaten with hammers and thrown overboard into the Atlantic while still conscious. Kingsley Ofusu managed to escape into the hold, where he crawled up a stack of containers and then up into the ceiling girders. For four days he was hounded like an animal, before jumping ship at Le Havre.
