Black woman humiliated by strip search

By Liz Fekete

1 April 1995

A 35-year-old black mother of three says she was strip-searched while having her period on her return from Jamaica.

The woman, according to the Voice newspaper, was asked at a British airport to undergo a strip-search by customs and excise officials who suspected her of importing drugs. The woman did not refuse, but became distressed when they removed every item of clothing, including her sanitary protection which was taken away for examination without offering her another one.
