Pakistani dies after government blocks private hospital treatment

By Liz Fekete

1 December 1996

A Pakistani heart patient has died after British officials blocked his trip to Britain for a bypass operation in case he overstayed his visa, even though his family had raised funds for his treatment at a Glasgow private hospital.

Mohammed Yaqoob, 49, was denied a visitor's visa for seven months, while his condition deteriorated. Mr Yaqoob died less than 48 hours after being finally granted entrance clearance to the UK on 'compassionate grounds'.

According to Labour MP George Galloway, the British authorities 'bear a major responsibility for this man's avoidable death'.
