New Scottish detention centre opened

By Liz Fekete

16 December 2002

The Dungavel Detention Centre in South Lanarkshire, which is run by Premier Detention Services, is Scotland's only asylum prison.

According to the Friends of Refugees in Ayrshire Group, Premier Detention Centre make it very difficult for human rights groups to visit the centre.

Refugee support groups are concerned at the detention of sixteen families, some with very young children at Dungavel. Campaigners are also attempting to prevent the deportation of a Roma family to Slovakia. Dusan and Agata Garza and their three children came to the UK after persecution by racist gangs. Agata gave birth to her youngest child two months prematurely after being assaulted by racist skinheads. The unborn child was injured in the attack.

Nigerian attempts suicide

In early March, a 31-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker, Dotun Adeosun attempted to take his life after receiving a letter from the Home Office telling him he would be deported. Adeosun had to be operated on, after driving a 7-inch iron rod through his stomach. Following the operation, he was returned to Dungavel where he was kept in segregation.
