Dismal showing for far-Right in general election

By Liz Fekete

1 August 1997

The far-Right parties scored particularly badly in the May general election.

The British National Party managed to save its deposits in just three of the 56 seats contested. The National Democrats saved its deposit in just one seat and the National Front and the Third Way failed to field a single candidate who got above 2 per cent of the vote.

Because the BNP fielded contestants in 56 parliamentary constituencies, it was legally entitled to a TV election broadcast. One TV station, however, refused to show it. Channel 4 argued that the BNP's election broadcast contained scenes of ordinary people who had not consented to the recording.
