Roots and patterns: educational resources

A series of four educational booklets covering the historical roots of racism and the fight against it.

Roots of racism

Roots of racism

The first book in the series covers Europe's early contacts with black people and the factors that fuelled the original drive for conquest. From the initial dominance of the Spanish and Portuguese, it traces the establishment of a worldwide colonial system and how that in turn fed Europe's economic development - in particular through the industrial revolution. It examines the slave trade and the genesis of modern racism. Roots of racism provides the historical context and background necessary to understand contemporary race issues.

Patterns of racism

The second book in the series traces the different ways that racism and colonialism have developed in various parts of the world and how and why they took on particular forms. Bringing the story up to the twentieth century, it covers North America, Australia and New Zealand, Southern Africa, Latin America, the West Indies and India. It concludes by looking at the type of racist culture that has been fostered by colonialism and imperialism. Patterns of Racism provides essential background reading for the study of such subjects as anti-colonial struggles, the US civil rights movement and the fight against apartheid in South Africa.

The fight against racism: a pictorial history of Asians and Afro-Caribbeans
(OUT OF PRINT)

Too often black people are portrayed as a 'social problem' or as passive victims of racism. The Fight Against Racism tells the real story. Drawing on leaflets, posters, news-sheets and pamphlets from within the black community as well as over 130 photographs, this book presents a pictorial history of Asian and Afro-Caribbean struggles and campaigns for racial justice from the Second World War to the present day. It covers such milestones in black resistance as the 1958 'race riots', the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination, the Grunwick dispute, and the defence of Southall in 1979. It also charts the struggles of black workers' organisations, youth movements, women's groups and the creation of a black press.
