Global Communities Global Communities aims to develop
better understanding of global
migration and refugee
issues amongst young people and to support teachers in
tackling these issues in
their classes.
There will be two Global Communities resource packs, one for Primary schools and one for Secondary schools. These will be filled with activity ideas, up to date information, inspiring case studies and suggestions for further resources and sources of information. The packs will be FREE and available in time for the academic year starting in September 2004. If you would like to pre-order a hard copy, contact the Refugee Week team by emailing info@refugeeweek.org.uk. (Please give the name of the school and your role there, the full postal address including postcode and state clearly whether you would like the primary or secondary pack.) FREE training days will be offered for teachers to enable them to learn more about global migration and refugee issues and how they can link them to the curriculum. The young people speak of the dangers which meant they had to leave their own countries (and in some cases their families), give a glimpse of the difficulties that faced them on their journey, and speak of their reception in Britain, with particular emphasis on their experiences in British schools. Citizenship/Personal, Social and Health education resource pack for teachers, youth workers and others
working with 11-14 year olds
I am Here! provides a clear and detailed approach to teaching about the controversial subject of refugees. By using active learning techniques to link young people's sense of belonging with the acceptance and inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds this resource pack supports the development of inclusive schools and helps young people to develop key skills within the framework of the Citizenship curriculum. I am Here! consists of a programme of six one-hour lessons that use drama, case studies, refugee children's testimonies and examples of the media's portrayal of marginalised groups to get young people thinking critically. Photocopiable activity and information sheets are included, plus a video showing young refugees talking about their experiences. There are also three extension projects for schools that want to continue work on refugees. Produced by "Show Racism the RED Card", the video A Safe Place features young asylum seekers talking about their experiences of seeking asylum in the UK. Also featured on the video are Gary Lineker, Thierry Henry, Shaka Hislop, Lomana Lua Lua, Shola Ameobi, Sven Goran Eriksson and Ashley Cole. The video also features a quiz on asylum aimed at combating racist myths. The accompanying education pack provides guidance on using the video in classroom and outlines links to several curriculum areas including Citizenship, English, History, RE and PSHE. Global Link has two major projects which help people empathise with the plight of refugees and asylum-seekers. Escape to Safety: a multi-media multi-sensory, interactive artistic exhibition within a 40 foot trailer which takes participants on a journey through different rooms that represent stages on a refugees' journey to seek asylum in the UK. Fortress Europe: an installation where participant walks through a 'labyrinth' of eight stations as if they were a refugee seeking asylum in Britain. On a walkman they are accompanied by refugee voices interacting with border-guards, immigration officials and tabloid media. Teaching resources are available to support work with both exhibitions.
